Ever see a Twitter post from a freelancer who is basically out of business because their computer suddenly died? Maybe you haven’t experienced something that extreme, but what happens when the power goes out and you’re running low on battery power?

It’s always a good idea to have a backup location with free wi-fi scoped out where you can plug in and get back to work in case you experience such a calamity. Power lines go down, transformers blow, cars crash into power poles, you name it and it could happen–usually right when you’ve got heavy deadlines. Plan ahead for these “unlikely” scenarios and you’ll be ready when you’ve got to scramble.

Do you know the difference between a non-compete and a work-for-hire agreement? Do you know what first worldwide rights are and how that agreement differs from one-time rights?

It is vital not to sign any agreement as a freelancer without knowing the specific implications of the contract you sign. Did you know some employers themselves don’t know what they’re asking their freelancers to agree to?

It’s true. If you don’t like the terms of the agreement you’re being asked to sign, you may be able to re-negotiate those terms, especially if the company wants to buy all rights. You may be able to get them to agree to pay you a bit more for that privilege, or you may be able to get them to change the deal to first rights–but you have to know exactly what you want and ask for it.
