<p>I was recently issued with a complementary copy of the Print Handbook for designers by Andy Brown at Media Collective (who are based here in the UK). The book itself is rather small, but is printed on quality card and embossed with foil block.</p>
From the official site:
<p>This little handbook is crammed with stuff which we think you&#8217;ll find very helpful. Especially if you&#8217;re a designer. Our goal is to help you see if your ideas will translate well when printed, as well as show what should be possible from your local press.</p>

<p><strong>I was shocked this morning when I received my Weekly Design Week Magazine.</strong> The cover reads <strong>&#8216;THE LAST ISSUE. Design Week Closes After 25 Years&#8217;</strong>.</p>
<p>At first, I though it was some kind of shock tactic to sell issues, but alas, <strong>no</strong>. Design week is no longer producing printed magazines. It is now continuing solely online.</p>
Why?
<p>Here&#8217;s an extract from the official byline:</p>

<p><strong>These designs are entitled &#8216;DeskTop Secret: The Plane Project&#8217; </strong>by <strong>Doopla Designers Collective</strong>. They are CMYK illustrations that graphically represent the main sections of an aeroplane. Surprisingly, there isn&#8217;t much information about these on the Doopla site, but I think they&#8217;re great.</p>
<p>The designs have been produced in vector format in <strong>Adobe® Illustrator</strong>, with cyan, magenta, yellow and Black (CMYK) being the only colours used. I especially like the repeating pattern photograph near the end of this post:</p>

<p><strong>If nobody gets the answers right after 2 days</strong>, I will post another image which is more guessable. I will repeat the process until the original profile images are shown.</p>

<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2955" title="life-calendar-poster" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/life-calendar-poster.jpg" alt="life calendar poster image" width="667" height="667" /></p>
<p>The Brigada Creativa Behance portfolio states that Life Calendars is a series of a different calendars which highlights an aspect of life:</p>
<p>&#8220;How was your day?&#8221; is the first of the series. The 365 days are represented by an emoticon that you have to draw as the day has gone (very good, good, regular, bad, very bad).</p>
<p>The poster design is flexible, too, as it doesn&#8217;t pertain to any given year as such&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2956" title="life-calendar-poster-2" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/life-calendar-poster-2.jpg" alt="life calendar poster image 2" width="667" height="556" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2957" title="life-calendar-poster-3" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/life-calendar-poster-3.jpg" alt="life calendar poster image 3" width="667" height="556" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2958" title="life-calendar-poster-4" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/life-calendar-poster-4.jpg" alt="life calendar poster image 4" width="667" height="556" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2959" title="life-calendar-poster-5" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/life-calendar-poster-5.jpg" alt="life calendar poster image 5" width="667" height="556" /></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll be getting one, though—as I&#8217;d fill it all with stressed out faces throughout the year!</p>
<p>These can be viewed on the Brigada Creativa Behance page. You can also order one of these over at the Brigada Creativa Shop, too (non-affiliate).</p>

What was Lifesaver</strong>? Their printed copy text explained:</p><p>It is a week of events from 28 March to 3 April organised by St Peter&#8217;s Church. Most events will have a short talk about why Jesus came.  We hope to see you there!</p><p>Elwyn of St Peter&#8217;s required a leaflet (pamphlet) and poster campaign that would carry their message over the course of 3 weeks. After excepting my quotation, I was hired to design a logo and leaflet design first to kick off the campaign. The logo is included in the above image.</p>Leaflet Design<p>I designed a roll-fold A4 full colour glossy leaflet. See a handful of the 2500 final printed versions below:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2936" title="church-leaflet-design-A4-image" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/church-leaflet-design-A4-image.jpg" alt="church leaflet design for A4 rollfold" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>The next 2 images show the entire double-sided roll-fold design when unfolded. Outer image on right:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2933" title="leaflet-rollfold-design-church-1" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/leaflet-rollfold-design-church-1.jpg" alt="leaflet rollfold design for church" width="667" height="467" /></p><p>Inner panels</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2943" title="leaflet-rollfold-design-2" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/leaflet-rollfold-design-2.jpg" alt="leaflet rollfold design" width="667" height="467" /></p><p>Here is a closeup of the printed logo, which I designed in Adobe Illustrator in vector format:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2935" title="church-logo-leaflet-design" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/church-logo-leaflet-design.jpg" alt="church logo on leaflet design" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>I used two popular and proven fonts within the design, <strong>Trajan Pro</strong> and <strong>Myriad Pro</strong> (in varied weights):</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2944" title="Christian-leaflet-copytext-design" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Christian-leaflet-copytext-design.jpg" alt="Christian leaflet copytext design" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>I also designed a custom map for the leaflet, which appeared on the very back page when folded:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2937" title="pamphlet-vector-custom-map-design" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/pamphlet-vector-custom-map-design.jpg" alt="pamphlet vector custom map design" width="667" height="500" /></p>Poster Sketches<p>The large-format posters were to be a series which revealed what the event was in 3 stages. It turned out that the A0 posters were required in landscape orientation, as they were to be placed in a pre-fitted board outside the Church.</p><p>I sketched a couple of &#8220;reveal&#8221; ideas in my Moleskine sketchbook. This was the concept I expanded upon and used:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2946" title="moleskine-sketching-poster-designs" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/moleskine-sketching-poster-designs.jpg" alt="moleskine sketching poster designs" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>This was a similar concept:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2947" title="moleskine-poster-design-concepts" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/moleskine-poster-design-concepts.jpg" alt="moleskine poster design concepts" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>I experimented with the graphic styling of the design, too:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2948" title="closeup-moleskine-sketch" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/closeup-moleskine-sketch.jpg" alt="closeup moleskine sketch" width="667" height="500" /></p><p>I decided to use vector shapes combined with stark imagery of rough seas:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2949" title="black-ballpoint-pen-sketching" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/black-ballpoint-pen-sketching.jpg" alt="black ballpoint pen sketching" width="667" height="500" /></p>Ao Large-format Landscape Poster Designs<p>Here are the final Ao poster designs in order [1]:</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2942" title="church-landscape-poster-design-A0" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/church-landscape-poster-design-A0.jpg" alt="church landscape poster design A0" width="667" height="472" /></p><p>[2]</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2939" title="church-event-poster-design-A0" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/church-event-poster-design-A01.jpg" alt="church event poster design A0" width="667" height="472" /></p><p>[3]</p><p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2940" title="st-peters-church-poster-design-A0" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/st-peters-church-poster-design-A0.jpg" alt="st peters church poster design A0" width="667" height="472" /></p>A3 and A4 Poster Design<p>The smaller A3 and A4 poster designs (that were displayed internally) showed just the final version of the design, but in portrait orientation:</p><p><img title="church-event-poster-design-A4" src="http://ak-main-blog.andrewkelsalldes.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/church-event-poster-design-A4.jpg" alt="church event poster design A4" width="667" height="936" /></p>Much Creative Fun, but for Real Purpose<p>I must say, this project was wonderful to work on. I had pretty much free reign to get my creative juices flowing. I produced something original and unique—and I feel like the whole campaign will have had a great impact on the community.</p><p>As a Christian, the project was more to me than just part of earning a living. I desired to create something was instrumental in spreading the Christian message to the people of Cauldwell.</p><p><strong>Here&#8217;s a thank you to Elwyn for great feedback, too.</strong><strong>Similar Posts of Interest</strong>A CD Album in 77 SnapsThe Typical Freelancer WorkloadLogo Design for Woodlands Community ChurchBranding a Singer/SongwriterCase Study: Identity, Branding and Signage for St Luke&#8217;s Church<p></p><p>This post is Copyright Andrew Kelsall, author of the Andrew Kelsall Graphic Design Blog.script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1">Andrew Kelsall | Creative Designer - Graphic Design Blog of Andrew Kelsall</p>
