Colombian dark chocolate packed with a healthy crunch of real freeze-dried fruit

Wanting to combine the finest quality chocolate with "fruit in its purest form," MarieBelle founder Maribel turned to freeze-dried fruit specialists Van Drunen Farms for her new Chocolate and Fruit Bars. The crispy organic bits mixed into MarieBelle's single-origin Colombian dark chocolate add a surprising texture not unlike puffed rice, but with a vibrant flavor kick and the nutritional value of fruit resulting from the freeze drying process.

The technique means that the bar's intense flavors comes directly from the fruit inside, eliminating the need for additives, preservatives or artificial flavorings "to show people that by using the best quality ingredients you can make something simple but so flavorful and rich!"

While the banana bar has the most pleasing crunch, the blueberry and strawberry were quickly nibbled up by our tasters too. Other flavors include mango and apricot, and each sells online, at the MarieBelle store in NYC's SoHo neighborhood and at select Whole Foods for around $7 a bar.

Ten natural treats for your four-legged friend

Rewarding your dog with a delicious treat can often be more harmful than good as so many of today's treats are packed with artificial flavorings, byproducts and fillers. We recently put CH mascots Otis and Logan to work testing an assortment of treats that skip over the bacon "flavor" in favor of a more natural experience, using beneficial grains like oats and quinoa instead of wheat flour. Also, because USDA food-processing rules help assure product consistency and safety, we kept domestically-made treats at the forefront. The ten snacks highlighted below have our dogs begging for more.

Made from scratch in Virginia using 100% organic human-grade ingredients Max and Ruffy's delivers true vegan dog treats without the fuss of going to a bakery. We especially like their grain-free line—which includes flavors like The Kelp Highway, Powerhouse, Mother Quinoa's Pumpkin Patch and Five-Star Blueberry—all packaged in compost-friendly boxes made entirely of recycled paperboard. The treats sell online from Max and Ruffy's for about $10 an eight-ounce box.

Bravo Raw Diet all-natural treats give your pet a nutritious boost with the flavor of real food. Devoid of supplements or artificial ingredients, Bravo's line typically includes a single protein ingredient either freeze dried or dry roasted. The brand's new Buffalo and Venison Liver Bonus Bites are already staples in the treat stash at CH HQ. Bravo sells from Amazon for around $13 per four-ounce bag.

Catch of the Day takes dog treats in a different direction, from the pasture to the sea. Loaded with proteins and antioxidants, the treats are comprised of only two ingredients—wild Pacific Ocean salmon skin and sweet potatoes—formed into the shape of a bone. These doggy indulgences provide chewing stimulation as well as a nutritious treat. Check Amazon to catch a five-ounce bag for $9.

Baa! treats aren't your ordinary dog snack. With a lineup that comes from free-range, grass-fed American lamb without any antibiotics and offering lamb parts like lung and trachea, Baa!'s treats have surprising health benefits. For example, the trachea is a great natural source of chondroitin, and chewing it helps remove both plaque and tartar. Baa! treats sell online, prices vary but start around $10 a bag.

Fresh is Best knows your pup loves a good meaty treat. Made from 100% USDA certified duck, the freeze-dried duck heart bites also double as the best natural pill pockets we've found. Buy directly through Fresh is Best or Amazon for $10 for a three-ounce bag.

Snook's dog treats are made in Oregon with the finest organic ingredients. We've found that most of the sweet potato treats our dogs tried went out the way they came in, but Snook's Sweet Potato Dog Chips are an exception to that. Containing only dried sweet potato, at $4 a bag they are organic and inexpensive, a rare find. Snook's sells from their online shop.

"Live. Love. Wag." Dognation's slogan says it all, and their ultra fresh refrigerated treats have our pups scarfing down their healthy blends. Adding vitamin B to help with doggie metabolisms, Dognation snacks are made with little more than chicken or beef and ground oats. You can snag an eight-ounce bag for $6 at PetSmart.

Plato's Farmers Market treats are grain- and filler-free, and really pack in the veggies with ingredients like carrot, celery, beet, parsley, lettuce, watercress, spinach, green pea, sweet potato, tomato, parsley. They are also slow roasted to seal in the flavor, a small detail that your dog will really appreciate. Plato's sell from Amazon for around $15 for a 12-ounce bag.

A recent addition to their line of healthy treats, Dr. Becker's Veggie Bites are made from fresh vegetables and high quality liver. Since highlighting Dr. Becker's Bites in 2006, the brand has remained a staple in the treat drawer. The Veggie Bites contain 2/3 veggies, a balance we like while keeping the same form and crunch. You can get your pup some of these tasty treats through Dr. Becker's online shop for about $16. We'd love to see these in a more crush-resistant package, however.

Unlike most others Smart Pup's dog treat smoothie comes in a little snack-pack container. Flavored with peanut butter and banana, this corn-, wheat- and dairy-free mix is exclusively designed with liquid glucosamine and chondroitin to strengthen your pup's hips and joints. Also available in Digestive Health and Skin and Coat formulas, a four-pack goes for $5 at Amazon.

Many designers stumble into the web industry from a fine arts background. Working commercially is a natural progression for artists – not only does it make for a reliable income, but you have the pleasure of making something useful for a wide audience. Furthermore, both art and design draw on many of the same concepts and we artist/designers are often able to incorporate our art skills into designs and illustrations.

Sometimes, however, the inspiration behind creating original artwork is missing from the design process, especially when cranking out content-managed websites or banner campaigns. A return to artistic roots often becomes an unavoidable want, and for me, such an instinct meant deciding to paint thirty portraits in three weeks during a trip back home. What surprised me was how much I discovered portrait painting could actually make me a better graphic designer.

Work Quickly

Robert Henri, an American portrait artist, advised his students:

Work with great speed… Finish as quickly as you can… The most vital things in the look of a face… endure only for a moment.

It is true that a portrait sitting has a limited length of time. Similarly, working quickly on a design to put down the most integral elements first will allow for more meaningful critiques and collaborations throughout the process.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Your work doesn’t have to be exactly right. It just has to feel right. Capturing someone’s likeness, like designing a website, will never be absolutely perfect. Getting it out there is often more important in terms of receiving feedback and iterating your way toward a better end-product.

Know Your Tools

Nothing slows a portrait painter down like having unfamiliar or the wrong tools, and there is lots to know; artists must know how to mix skin and hair colors, how their brushes make certain shapes or textures with the paint, and the different results depending on the kinds of paint and surfaces. Similarly, knowing how certain Photoshop or Illustrator tricks can affect an image will certainly influence the integrity of a final design. Try to gain experience with these tools early on and learn your own process intimately. This will result in better work later down the road or during those time-crunch projects.

Tell a Story

While back home I visited the Life Stories exhibit at the Orlando Museum of Art whose curator had written:

“While a portrait can be admired for its skilled rendering of a likeness or an inventive presentation of its subject, it is the underlying life story that often makes the work memorable.”

True! The story behind a portrait is what draws the viewer in. Web designers too should strive to reveal their content in an interesting way.

Tell the Story that Isn’t There

When looking at a portrait, art critics are often interested in what is just outside the frame; what is not explicitly shown can say much about a piece’s historical or stylistic context. This effort to understand is part of the process that makes an experience worthy of sharing.

Web designers can make a user think by leaving something out or only halfway visible. When it comes to content development, question clients and dig deep to discover the hidden or little-known facts about a project so that you are able to reveal something new. Certainly a site should be easy to use, but the content should also remain complex enough to retain intrigue.

Don’t Reinvent the Wheel

Many artistic techniques are tried and true. In art schools when drawing or painting a figure, artists are taught to first draw a body’s general shape and structure to determine the correct proportions. This makes every subsequent action easier and usually prevents having to repaint entire areas of the face or body. In design, teachers advise the use of a grid to determine a layout’s proportions, another taught technique. There is a value in learning from others’ experiences, so ensure that if and when you decide to buck tradition, you aren’t doing it to the detriment of your work, or out of ignorance.

Your Client is the Subject

A good portrait reveals its subject according to their personality. Effective designs, too, will focus on project requirements, established goals, and the clients themselves. Keeping these objectives front and center will make your work more interesting and relevant, and will ultimately provide better solutions for your client.

Avoid Trends

While portraits have a long history and plethora of influences, an individual portrait should be unique. Why? Because a subject has a unique personality and needs, same as the client for which you are designing. Your work will undoubtedly be influenced by its place in history, but when possible, veer away from trends and other replicable ideas that have little to do with your subject matter. It can be difficult to let go of an attachment to a particular style, but cultivate the nerve to try something different and you will grow as an artist or designer.

Don’t Avoid the Ugly Parts

Avoiding unusual features in portraits (things like moles or bad haircuts or extra weight) is fairly easy to do; you simply act like they aren’t there. You come to find at the end of the sitting, however, that it is those features that make people look like themselves. Designers also see ugly parts of designs or even of clients’ businesses, but ignoring these issues is only putting off the problem for later on or someone else, which is not exactly great work ethic. Instead, deal with problems now. See if you can make those ugly parts more attractive by the way you frame them, or better yet, try to cut them off at the source. You may not be able to fix everything but you can certainly have peace of mind knowing that you tried.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Working quickly on a portrait (or on a design) requires a moment to step away from the canvas (or screen) and self-critique. I cannot stress enough the importance of this pause. Take time to back away and observe the bigger picture. It is during these moments that some of your greatest insights about your work will occur.

The Last Ten Percent

The final throes of a painting or design project are often the hardest, but following through will set your work apart from everyone elses. In painting, an artist that pays attention to the edges of a canvas or to choosing the perfect frame will have a more marketable finished piece. Similarly, completing the last bits of a design project – perhaps the final quality assurance or code cleanup – will make it a better piece for your portfolio and thus more likely to be shared with prospective clients.

Design, like portrait painting, gets easier the more pieces you finish, and practicing good habits along the way simply streamlines the process. But more than this, perhaps the most revelatory thing you can do to improve your design skills is to be open to learning lessons from unexpected endeavors.

South Africa's subversive new publication takes on the country's contemporary creative culture

Founded to "really assault the dominant narratives in our own unique way," the South African magazine Mahala goes against the typically glossy grain with an "un-designed" style that allows its similarly raw content to shine. The publication launched in August 2010 and, now on its second issue, supplements a daily website—both the brainchild of Andy Davis.

Stories like "Surfing is Wanking," "Racist Dogs" and "The Colonialism of Small Things"—to name just a few—shed light on topics that affect South Africans, but with its Vice magazine-style journalism, anyone interested in leading-edge culture will appreciate this unconventional upstart.

We recently probed Davis to find out more about Mahala's beginnings, its future, and the overall state-of-mind in South Africa.

What do you most hope to accomplish with Mahala?

I want to create a platform for a racially-integrated South African youth culture that can interrogate our experience, our culture and really just provide an impetus for people to make good, relevant stuff. South Africa is still a radically segmented place. And we've got a whole backlog of shit that's been swept under the carpet and kept out of view. I want Mahala to pick at those edges, to go where the art, music, literature, etc. intersects with politics, society and weird-ass South African dynamics like race relations and socio-economic disparities.

The online site tries to crunch through what's happening in South Africa on a daily basis. We aim to publish three to four stories a day. The debates we get going in the comments show that our audience really gives a shit about what we say, and they have a stake in the culture so they all pile in and make their voice heard, which is a good thing. But it can be quite rough on the comment boards. We have a non-intervention policy. We don't delete anything. If people want to hang themselves kak vibes, so be it.

We hold the print magazine to a higher standard. We want people to read everything twice. It's supposed to be a real collector's item. But it also gives us the latitude to publish photo features, fashion, fiction and investigative journalism that isn't always suited to online attention spans.

What is the most challenging part of creating each Mahala edition?

Getting the right mix of words and images, without being too gratuitous or going too hardcore, but still being able to interrogate the culture and experience. I think with our first issue we were sitting on so much unreleased content that we didn't temper it properly. So it was a bit relentless. With the second issue we got the mix a bit better varying between depth and levity. There were some almost academic style articles, hard-hitting investigative journalism, some great narrative non-fiction, fiction and some nice humor.

Another thing we really struggle to do is find good, black writers, photographers and illustrators. That's not to say they don't exist, it's just that South Africa is so systemically fucked up thanks to apartheid that massive segments of the population were actively uneducated by the apartheid schooling system. So, generally speaking, anyone who is black, creative, talented and competent gets employed very quickly. And there just isn't a plethora of young black talent beating down our doors, desperate to get published. And the last thing we want to be is a group of whiteys sitting around writing about black culture. We want to push this relationship into a "post-racial" space. Things are changing though, and it's picking up pace. And we certainly don't want to be those sad guys who do head counts based on skin color. But we're still a long way off from the ideal of an equitable, meritocratic society.

Does each edition have an underlying theme?

Not yet, but we may be heading that way. I think at the moment, we don't need to introduce over-arching themes because the culture is happening all around us and having a theme would necessarily occlude some of the most relevant and exciting stuff. Besides, I quite like the way the magazine jump cuts from narrative to narrative. I want them to stand alone and not have too much editorial unity. We always said Mahala would support a plurality of views, so it's cool for each piece to stand alone and not be perceived as coming from central editorial authority.

What can we look forward to seeing in Mahala 3?

I think it'll be bigger and better than Mahala 2. I thought there were some little failings in the last issue, that I'm glad to have the opportunity to rectify in the next issue. But those are mainly little publishing minutiae and insecurities. Generally the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. At this stage a lot of the content is still in the air. We're also working on a site redesign and, for our international readers, we'll be making all the print mags available online as PDFs, from the next issue.

To subscribe to the print publication or receive their daily updates, visit the Mahala website.

In it, I shared lots of language you can experiment with when answering questions like, “What’s your hourly rate?” or “How much is a logo?” and what to say when a payment is late — a pretty common occurrence these days.

Here’s one example that many people seemed to appreciate: what to say when the project isn’t quite finished but you want to submit your invoice because you know it will take a while to get your money or just because you’re in the midst of a cash flow crunch.

I suggested something along the lines of, “We’re winding down and here’s what’s left to do: [list the details]. I’d like to get the final invoice into your system. Does that work on your end?”

Have you tried this and how has it worked? Do you have any more suggestions for this situation?

That was my second lesson learned from going large.

This seems like a no-brainer, but enforcing the “one point of contact” rule with a larger
project/client can be a little tricky.

Maybe it’s due to the complexity of the project or just the nature of the client’s organization. But no matter the size, having everything go through one person can make things easier. That being said, keep the following in mind:

Let them be heard
I think people resist the idea of “one point of contact” because they want to be heard. When people get stressed due to a crunched timeline, their insecurities surface. They feel like if they don’t have their fingers on everything, something will get dropped.

I think it’s possible for people to be heard without micro-managing. Having someone on the project that can serve as a filter for ideas can be helpful. If someone who isn’t your point of contact gives you a call, listen to their feedback, assure them that you will consider their idea and then gently remind them that all feedback should go through the project lead. This approach should limit the number of voices shouting at you.

Don’t play politics
The rumors are true; large companies have an amazing ability to build a very political environment, sometimes without even trying. It was important for me to denounce this behavior at every chance I got. Call it my personal mission or just good business, but I made it a point to speak up every time someone on the project tried to make a political move.

How? First, by sharing that I wanted no part in what was happening. Second, by providing what I thought was a solution. This allowed all parties to share ideas without creating multiple leaders on the project.

What have been your experiences with working for large companies? How have you dealt with politics – with clients large and small – in the past?

Be on the lookout for lesson 3 tomorrow.

For more from Luke, check out his webinar, Which Hat Are You Wearing Today?, on March 16, 2011.

Could you work in an office? Not your office, but the kind that requires you to be somewhere else from 9 to 5. With people tracking your comings and goings, your lunch breaks, and how often you appear to be on a tweetchat or otherwise surfing the Web. You know. Office Space. The Office.

One of my immutable business principles is that I don't take on clients that want me to be onsite. The main reason, of course, is that I'm a business owner and not a freelancer. I have multiple clients, and I need the flexibility to schedule both client work and all the other activities that come with running a business. I might work a lot of hours, but they're my hours.

But there's a second reason: I just don't want to be in an office all day.

This question arose recently because I went in to talk with a prospect about some potential work. The client and I clicked. The project was interesting. I could easily have managed much of it offsite, coming in as needed for meetings and to touch base with people--and spending more hours onsite as the project hit crunch time. But they really wanted someone they could see every day.

Could you work in an office? I don't mean if the alternative were bankruptcy or being dragged over hot coals. But whether it's a viable option for you. If your answer is NO, then is that the measure of a true workshifter?

Every freelancer needs a source for clients. We rely on clients, nurture our relationships with them, and provide a quality of service that keeps then coming back. And we can never have enough of them! The Monster List of Freelance…

Every freelancer needs a source for clients. We rely on clients, nurture our relationships with them, and provide a quality of service that keeps then coming back. And we can never have enough of them! The Monster List of Freelance Job Sites has one purpose: to massively increase your source of potential clients and potential jobs.

This list, like Isaac Newton, stands on the shoulders of giants. The second edition of our Monster List of Freelance Job Sites has been valuable and much visited since April 2009. With over a hundred comments from our fantastic readers which has really added to its value. This list is a thorough update, removing dead links, adding new sites, and taking on board many of the suggestions from your comments.

We start the list with FreelanceSwitch’s own Job Board, which has categories for design, development, writing, illustration, Flash, and miscellaneous jobs, and at the time of writing contains a huge 220+ jobs. Jobs are hand-moderated by FreelanceSwitch staff and volunteers from our dedicated community of freelancers. You can see the available jobs with no strings attached, but to apply for jobs, you need to sign up, which costs just $7 a month. And you can advertise jobs at absolutely no cost.

Is this list now finished? I doubt it ever will be. Like the last list, it will become more valuable as you comment on which sites you found most helpful, inform us of sites that have been missed, and warn us when links stop working. And, best of all, get those jobs!

Traditional Job Boards

XBRL (standing for eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a way of tagging data for easy machine readability – the “i” simply denotes a slightly fancier version used by HMRC. While Sage software can handle vanilla XBRL, they will not have an iXBRL exporting tool in place before HMRC’s 1st April deadline. This is hugely disappointing for Sage’s many thousands of UK customers – including many huge multinationals and accounting firms – who will now have to find a third-party conversion tool to complete their Corporation Tax submission online.

This marks the end of a tough week for Sage, who launched their long-awaited first foray into cloud accounting to barely-audible fanfare, with many industry figures branding their new software “lightweight” and “tepid”. This is hardly surprising, as the once-innovative company has become a lumbering behemoth in recent years, slow to adapt to market conditions and even slower to release updates to their software. It seems as though this latest delay will actually impact their users past the point of simple annoyance though.

Thankfully, freelancers using Sage are few and far between, so the delay likely won’t affect you unless you are a freelance accountant using the software to manage your client’s books.

As you may have heard, our Government is a little strapped for cash at the moment. Because of this, they have decided to introduce a raft of measures to increase their cashflow. One of the measures being employed by HMRC is the fairly innocuous sounding “Employer Compliance Visit”. Although it may sound like a friendly sit-down over a cup of tea, what it actually means is that HMRC will turn up on your doorstep to check your books, and issue a fine if they are not in order. HMRC say they plan to visit 50,000 businesses in the first half of the year, so this is a fairly wide-reaching measure, and freelancers shouldn’t assume they will be overlooked just because their business is relatively small.

Some things to be aware of are that HMRC won’t simply arrive at your house unannounced and demand to see your books – they will get in contact first to arrange a meeting where the accounts can be inspected – often your accountant’s office. You are also perfectly within your rights to decline to meet with HMRC agents – as long as you make all your books public.

The PCG are claiming these visits are also being used as an opportunity to enforce the much-maligned IR35 legislation. As well as look at your accounts, HMRC will also ask to inspect contracts with clients. If your contracts arouse their suspicions, you will be asked to fill out one of their questionnaires – which are often a precursor to IR35 action.

Of course the PCG offer tax investigation support for their members, so this may be a bit of scaremongering on their part to drum up some new subscriptions – however, there’s no harm in diligence, so as well as making sure your accounts are in order, now may be a good time to look into your IR35 status too.

I have a thing for portable signs. The letters are always kind of crunchy and the words are sometimes misspelled -- or just plain missing. And the copy itself is often priceless. I've always been drawn to this kind of rural roadside advertising, and am now kicking myself for all signs I've whizzed by over the years. So it's time to start pulling over and taking a few quick shots before I lose out on any more of these little gems.
